Guardian of all doors. Any offering to an Orisha must first go through Elegua. He is apart of the warrior trio. Elegua opens the road, Ogun clears the road, and Ochosi hunts the Prey.

The first question usually asked of the Orisha is, what is the difference between Esu and Elegua? They are the same. Esu is a child like personality which is why candy is often offered to him. Elegua is the matured adult version, he is often referred to as "Papa Elegua". Papa Elegua candles are often set behind a door, protecting the journey as one leaves and watching the home in their absence . Esu candles, are usually left outside the home to ward off negativity.

Next question most common for Esu, is he Evil? because of his trickster label and child like personality, think negatively about him. Esu is associated with term " trick or treat". Rather than weaponizing these traits we should recognize it as a sense humor.

Esu's trickster personality enables him to warn against traps laid for his children. As a guide he ensures an understanding of consequential actions.

"When you know better you must do better"

"Who don't learn must feel"

"Hard head makes a soft ass"

" Ignorance is bliss"

We can find the entertainment of Esu in the beauty of metaphors, the taboos of creative art, and the price of wisdom in experience.

Even in the Bible, God is said to have a sense of humor.

God promised this elderly couple a child: “A son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir” (Genesis 15:4).

And God had said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars . . . . So shall your offspring be” (Genesis 15:5).

When Sarah finally gave birth at ninety, Abraham named their son Isaac, which means “laughter.” As Sarah exclaimed, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me”

(Genesis 21:6).

It amazed her that she could nurse a child at her age! God transformed her skeptical laughter when she’d heard she’d give birth

(Genesis 18:12) into laughter of sheer joy

Prayers to Elegua :

When you want odds on your side, need to make a calculated decision, when your at cross roads metaphorically and literally ( it is said that his spirit resides at cross roads), when you want to become privy of traps that may be layed for you, become privy of tricksters surrounding you, protection of the home when you are not there. Protection when you leave for the day, protection when entering or leaving a room.

Children of Esu are usually restless and require much to keep their attention. I am sure you know someone with these traits and it doesn't make them evil.

Ogún is the warrior Orisha with the greatest physical strength. When the Orishas were on earth, Ogun discovered the art of iron by manipulating it to a machete. Ogun then used the machete to cut down greenery and created pathways. He was also swift in slaying enemies. The town recognized him for always working tirelessly. Ogún is apart of the warrior trio, he works with Ochosi (the divine hunter) and Eleggua (the road opener).

Prayers to Ogún include clearing of any obstacles, creating a path on roads, and removing enemies.

Children of Ogún are usually great with their hands and find careers in fields that deal with metal. This includes, technology, iron workers, construction workers, etc.

Like Ogún, his children tend to be all work no play and struggle to be intimate. Since they have a hard time processing emotions outside of work, when a son of Ogún does express emotion it could be violent.

Are you a child of Ogún ?

Ochosi’s story like most has different versions.

Our short summary is that Ochosi was sent to hunt a bird for Olofi ( a supreme god). After much time due due a scarce hunting season, he finally catches the prey. Ochosi returns home only to find that someone took his bird.

He then shoots his arrow and directs it to pierce whomever took the bird. Ochosi realized it was his mother who took the bird when he found her unalive with his bow in her chest. He was distraught but in the end accepted that justice had been served.
